Operating System Differences

While working with Blender we ran into some problems. First I should explain that all of the tutorials we found were written for pcs even though the program is a cross platform program. Terra and I decided we wanted to try working with Blender on a mac to see what the differences were.

When using the program on a mac, certain keyboard shortcuts were not available. For example, the keyboard shortcut to render a scene(see what the camera sees) is to push the F12 key. However, on my mac, the F12 key brings up an application called Dashboard. As you learn to use Blender, keyboard shortcuts make it easier to navigate the many menus. Not having all of those shortcuts may slow down the creation process. Another issue we ran into with using a mac was that in some of the directions describe using a right click to select something. After some tinkering, we figured out that if you hold the control key and click it is the same as the right click. Once we had figured that out, we were slightly disheartened to find that there was no way to substitute for a click wheel (the little wheel between the right and left buttons on a standard pc mouse).

Something that frustrated the both of us to no end was the directions in the tutorial we went through was sometimes maddeningly vague. It would take random clicking through the editing menus and careful scrutiny of the screenshots provided to figure out what was needed.

The overall hardest part of working with Blender was simply figuring out how to use it.
