The Computer Science Kiosk: A Project by Melanie Othon

My name is Melanie Othon,  I am a student at St. Norbert College, class of 2017 and I will be graduating with a major in Computer Science and minor in Philosophy.
The purpose of this site is to document my 15-week progress on my senior capstone project, the Computer Science Kiosk. Enjoy!

Philosophy Statement

I was first introduced to Computer Science in 2013 as a freshman in Introduction to Programming. I had come into college having no idea what I wanted to major in, hoping just to be inspired by something. In high school I was interested in learning how to code, but I felt that online tutorials weren't quite doing it for me. So, I went into the CSCI 110 class very hopeful, and I was not disappointed. I was immediately drawn to the problem solving aspect of it, as well as the rewarding feeling of creating something and seeing the results immediately before my eyes. In constructing several games, I felt that my creativity was being realized to its full potential, solving problems in order to make something fun and aesthetically pleasing that others can enjoy. I also saw it as an appropriately challenging field, seeing as no two problems were ever alike and I was always learning something new. 

There were moments very early on where I questioned whether or not it was a good idea for me to pursue computer science. It was no coincidence that these moments only came when I had been sitting, looking at my code, unable to find the one bug that was preventing me from accomplishing what I wanted. As time went on, however, learning different methods of debugging and organizing my code allowed me to enjoy the rewards of programming more, and I became more assured that I was right to pursue computer science.

This rewarding feeling has stuck with me throughout my four years at St. Norbert College, and I am eager to learn more as challenging problems arise in my future career.
