My Philosophy
This isn't my first time in college. The first time I went to school, I majored in English and minored in Philosophy. I ended up working a variety of entry-level jobs... and I wasn't happy about it. I knew I could do more with my life. If I was going to go back to school, what would I major in? I wanted to major in something employable, a field that would pay well and help me provide for my family. What kind of major would that be? Business? Physics? Communications?
I thought long and hard about what I enjoyed, what I was good at, and where I could see myself in 25 years. I had no interest in physics, and with the time I spent working in banking, I knew I wouldn't want to spend my life working in business or accounting. I came to Computer Science.
My father was a programmer, developer, computer salesman and tech school teacher when I was younger. We were the first family I knew with the internet. I loved showing my friends new things on computers. I was always the go-to for troubleshooting at my various jobs. I was good at computers.
As I learned more about the field and gained practical experience, I realized this was the field for me. I enjoy troubleshooting. I like helping people learn more about technology. I love the rush from a successful test. I want something beautiful, practical and useful for others to enjoy. I want to work in Computer Science.
And I love being a woman in Computer Science. It's not easy; there aren't a lot of us out there. I know I will find people who aren't real keen on some girl working on their project, whether they admit it or not. As the mother of a daughter, I will find girls who don't think they could be any good at computers, math, or science... just because they are a girl. I will be the woman that shows her that girls can be STEM Superstars!
