Welcome Back!

Best wishes to all for an exciting and productive semester! Be certain to ask the seniors how their projects are coming along - our seniors are Kayla, Gwynn, Brian, Chris, Joel, Paul, Derek, Sergii, Micah, Caesar and Dale.  Good luck!

About Computer Science at St. Norbert College

St. Norbert College provides a broad opportunity to integrate the theoretical aspects of computing with the more applied focus of other applications. The curriculum has a strong focus on software engineering and is continually reviewed and updated to keep abreast with computing technology.

Within the computer science major, the computer science concentration provides a solid background for advanced study in computer science while the business information systems concentration and graphic design and implementation concentration provide a more applied background.

Business Information Systems (BIS):

  • integrates the theory and applications of both business and computer science.
  • prepares students for computing careers in business such as programmer-analyst, database design, or end-user liaison
  • culminates with a semester-long group project for a client
Computer Science (CS):
  • is consistent with the recommendations of the Association of Computing Machinery for majors in Computer Science
  • prepares students for graduate study in computer science
  • prepares students for computing careers in a wide variety of areas such as software development, networking, or systems administration
Graphic Design and Implementation (GDI):
  • integrates the theory and applications of both graphic design and computer science
  • prepares students for careers in developing aesthetic and functional web sites and user interfaces
  • prepares students for graduate studies in Human-Computer Interaction
  • is innovative, unique, and not widely offered at other colleges and universities

Graduates are fully qualified for entry-level positions in computing and are also well prepared to pursue graduate study in the area of their concentration. The computer science major combines computer science and liberal arts courses giving attention to developing oral and written skills as well as technical computing skills.

The purpose of the computer science major is to prepare students for a career in computing grounded in the liberal arts, providing a foundation for lifelong learning through professional development and/or graduate study.

Why study computer science?
The study of Computer Science prepares an individual to enter a fast-growing, exciting and ever-changing profession. Using computer systems, students design and implement solutions to problems that exist in all domains.

Mission statement
The Computer Science discipline strives to support the mission of the College. To this end, the discipline is committed to providing a curriculum that is intellectually challenging, preparing graduates to understand both the fundamental concepts in computing as well as the computing profession within the context of a larger society. The discipline recognizes the need to develop an awareness of the cultural, social, legal and ethical issues inherent in the discipline of computer science. The Computer Science program prepares students to not only handle the technical aspects of computing but also enables them to make decisions that are just, to communicate solutions effectively and to be lifelong learners in the field. Because of our roles in developing software systems, we have significant opportunities to do good, to cause harm, or to influence others to do good or cause harm. The Computer Science program at St. Norbert College develops graduates who are morally and intellectually prepared to take on the challenges of a career in computing.
