Eric Sallmann
Majors: Computer Science with a Business Systems Concentration and Business Administration
Philosophy Statement
When I first came to St. Norbert College, I had no intention to become a Computer Science major. Although computers have always fascinated me growing up, I never got exposure to any CS courses until I decided to take the introductory class my Freshman year. After doing so, I fell in love with the profession and decided to major in it. Although the difficulty of the courses was sometimes strenuous and even though there were times I wanted to quit, I fought through workload and I don't regret doing so to this day. It has given me many different career path opportunities that I may not have had with another field and it has taught me so much, allowing me to think in different and unique ways that has challenged me more that I ever had before. There's nothing that excites me more than getting project requirements from a user on a project and by using my own creativity and design, being able to create a program from scratch to make their jobs and their lives easier.
Computer Science is about both creativity and problem solving that challenges developers and allows them to solve difficult business problems quickly and efficiently. With the ever changing dynamic of this field and the constant improvements of technology occurring in the global business world, it is important for developers to continue learning and keeping informed about computer science issues all the time. It's a field that puts people in wonderment and in awe, something that users both desire and look for in the technology that they use everyday. To see myself in a career field amongst a group of other individuals who are innovators and making change in the technological world, makes me honored and pleased to be a part of it all.
Career Path
I am currently working at Schneider National Inc. doing programming work using Visual Basic with Microsoft Excel and Access. I recently got hired at Schneider National Inc. where I will be working as a MTS - Associate Enterprise Resource Planning Programmer Analyst after I graduate where I will be in charge of maintaining, developing, and servicing Schneider's HR information systems using Oracle, PL/SQL, Java, and other software packages. Eventually after a few years in the field, I plan on going to graduate school where I can get my MBA in either Managerial Business or Information Technology depending on the career path I desire to take.
