Week 3: Switching Platforms?

Categories Updates

This week posed a few big issues and some I’m not sure how to solve yet. The problems all came to a head on Wednesday afternoon when the application I planned to use no longer seemed to work in the way I needed it to.

Moving to Tableau

Wednesday afternoon I decided to move over to Tableau to try to visualize my data because I didn’t know if all the data I needed was going to work on a map setting vs charts. After playing around for a bit, I create the map below. The colors are inverted, so the darker blue, the warmer the world was that year. However, I don’t think that I’m going to be able to stay using Tableau for a number of reasons, but the main one being that I don’t think animation or a time slider will be an option.

The other major issue that was appearing was that my license through SNC was not able to publish maps. So even if I was able to create them, I could not publish. Since then, I was able to get my account updated and I think I am planning on going back in Arc-GIS to work on creating a time animation of global temperatures.

Mini Poster Presentations

On Thursday, during capstone class, we had Mini Poster Presentations where each of us presented our ideas and prototypes to get feedback. About halfway through these presentations, I realized I might not be thinking about this project in the right light. I was focusing more on creating general visualizations of data instead of specifically animating data. So I am a bit back to square one, but I think I have a better plan to move forward with. The day was also nice to be able to see how others are thinking about their projects and the progress they have made.

What’s Next?

This weekend is going to be focused on trying to pull in/format data in Arc-GIS especially when it comes to Temporal layers. These specific layers are what allow animation and a time slider. I’ve found many different sources of documentation, but I’m going to work on reading through them to see how I may need to format the data (JSON, txt, CSV, Excel, database, etc.). The tutorial I plan to follow can be found here:
