::Nano Technology::

Nano technology refers to the method by which modern computing processors are manufactured. The circuitry components utilized in our project are macroscopic -- they can be seen with the naked eye. In nano circuitry, those components are created directly on a thin slice of silicon, referred to as a wafer. They are interconnected by etching channels ("wires") into the semi-conducting board.

All modern microprocessors, such as the Pentium family, are made possible by nano-technology. Our project, which performs a relatively simple task, contains between 100 and 200 transistors. A modern Pentium IV processor, which is an extremely complex microprocessor, contains approximately 55,000,000, yes, 55 MILLION transistors and is the size of about a 1"x1" ultra-thin chip!

As one can imagine, nano-technology can only be worked on under high magnification and in a clean room environment. The reason that processor manufacturers are commonly shown dressed in what appear to surgical suits or space suits, is because of the fact that even a small dust particle would totally destroy a processor due to it's small size and dense circuitry!
